1. Introduction

A Rose for Emily is one of William Faulkner'cs famous short stories. It mainly tells the story that after the American Civil War the traditional society of the South experiences a huge impact and transformation on the effect of the industry civilization of the north. Under this special environment, the declining Southern noble lady, Miss Emily, pursues her love bravely, but eventually she poisons her lover and sleeps with his dead body for decades.

2. Literature review

In the previous studies, the theme analyses for A Rose for Emily mainly focus on William Faulkner’s southern complex. Cai Liying (2009) has pointed out that William Faulkner as the representative of American southern literature pours into mixed feelings for the southern people he loved by telling the story of a small town in the South..For the social upheaval after the war, William Faulkner always tries to think about the future of the southern society as a southern writer, but he is also trapped into the unique psychological of the southern people :They have to face the impact of the modern industrial civilization of the north but also hardly give up the former glory of the south. Hu Meng and Xie Xiuqing (2012) think that the way to rebuild the ruined south is to remove the backward and negative factors in southern culture though the social transformation must be accompanied with the pain. For the harsh modern industrial civilization of the north, William Faulkner has a critical and cynical attitude. He doubts whether such mercenary value of the north could guarantee the future of America in the long term. He keeps observing the game between the two opposite culture born in the one land, by which he wants to make the bright American culture shine again (Xiao Minghan, 2000). As a traditional southern writer, he still insists on some virtues and sense of worth of the south, which reflect his resistance to modern civilization and attachment to traditional culture. It can be seen that by describing the beauty and pride of the heroine—Emily, he cryptically praises the dignity and the bravery of the southern people:Emily has the will like iron and she has never surrendered to any pressure to change herself, carrying her choice out always. On the contrary, that northern man, Homer Barron, is hypocritical and selfish. He cares about nothing, except his own profits. By the contrast of the two images, William Faulkner intends to convince that to some extent the south may be much nobler than the north and the glory of God is still shining in south (Zhang Jie, 2015).

From all above, it can be seen that William Faulkner’s complex on the frustrated southern civilization is the key point for the theme analyses for A Rose for Emily, but the discussion on the theme should not be limited on the fact that William Faulkner has full southern complex in the novel but it should also be evaluated how William Faulkner has described the concrete dilemmas of the southern society with his southern complex.

Additional, the theme analysis on the novel cannot be separated from the analysis of the heroine, Emily. She is the typical southern symbol of the lost generation in that age. As the protagonist of A Rose for Emily, Emily combines numerous conflicts: the South and the north, new and old forces, justice and injustice, hope and despair, good and evil, love and hate and Emily has chosen two paths in her life: silence or struggle. However, under the multiple pressures of patriarchal culture, southern culture, industrial culture and post-war culture, her fate is doomed to end in tragedy (Liu Hongyun, 2012). What she used to believe in has been crashed in the ash of the history and she gradually becomes a stranger and bystander no one was willing to accept her. One side, she is faithful to the loyal southern society, from her birth to her death. The other side, she is also the betrayer of the class and the society she is in :She puts the relationship with a northern worker honestly, never caring about the gossips and condemnation of other southern people in the town. When she is cheated by the dishonest northern man, in order to detain him forever, she chooses to kill him straightly instead of crying or beseeching him poorly. It is the best evidence to prove her dignity as noble southern nobility. The plot also can be understood as a statement that southern people would never lower their heads to the northern people though they have been defeated in the war (Cai Liying, 2009).Thus, for evaluating the theme of the novel deep, the different edges of Emily should be continued to explore.

3. Theme analysis of William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily

3.1 Dilemmas in the South of the United States after the civil war

The days before the war in the south can be described as rich and noble on the foundation of the plantation economy and slave labor. With the failure in the civil war, the south has to face the tremendous change unwillingly. The previous conflicts in race and class still exist, and the traditional plantation economy also begins to fade. Mostly southern people choose to cherish the memory of the brilliant past to comfort their losing. This tendency is reflected in the creation of the novels in that age obviously that mostly southern writers describe the south as a fertile paradise and accuse the north of the gloom after the war bitterly. William Faulkner is different from them. Though he loves all thing of his birth land and feels proud for the brilliant culture and history of the south, he admits the decadence and weakness in the southern society of 内容过长,仅展示头部和尾部部分文字预览,全文请查看图片预览。 文明——《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》人物象征性分析,《***学报》,第7期,56-58。
