My grandpa had a fairly new silver Dodge. On a late-winter weekend, my dad needed to use a car — any car — since the family vehicle was being repaired in the garage. So Grandpa offered him the use of the Dodge.

Later, my brother Tim borrowed the car from Dad as he wanted to go to a friend’s home. He spied an old country lane (小路)that he had taken once or twice during the past summer as a short cut to his friend’s home. A covering of snow lay across the farmer’s, fields through which the lane wound. But Tim was confident that he could go off-roading without difficulty. So he turned the Dodge into the old lane.

However, the melted water from the previous mild days had flooded the nearby Raritan River. The old lane was now acting as a branch of the river. This was not immediately visible due to the fact that the river water had frozen during the night and the ice was topped with snow. Tim didn’t realize the situation until the two back wheels of the car broke through the invisible ice and plunged (陷入)into water up to the trunk (后备箱). He had to call Dad for help.

An hour and a half later, the car was finally-pulled onto dry land. Tim and Dad took one look at the muddy vehicle and sent it straight to the local car wash. They drove the car back just half an hour before Grandpa came, and made an agreement to tell Grandpa nothing about the car’s unexpected adventure.

Visibly impressed by the Dodge’s shining condition, Grandpa thanked my dad while unlocking the trunk to put his suitcase、Lifting the door, Grandpa saw the muddy water inside. “Ah,Dave...” said Grandpa to Dad in a fairly calm voice. “Is there something you should be telling me about?

Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist. He contributed greatly to the advancement of medical science, developing, cures for many dangerous illnesses.

His most important discoveries were in the field of genii study. He showed that germs required certain micro-organisms (微生物)to develop. Louis Pasteur then turned to practical ways of killing bacteria in liquids such as milk. His process of Pasteurisation successfully killed bacteria in milk without destroying milk protein. This was a basic discovery. The process of Pasteurisation was named after him, and it saved many lives.

In the 1870s, Pasteur sought to find a cure for anthrax (炭疽)— a disease that mainly affects cattle. At first, he found anthrax was much more likely to spread if farmers buried dead sheep with the disease in fields. Pasteur then advised farmers not to bury any dead animals in areas where cattle may eat grass in the future. In 1881, he performed an experiment to test his vaccine (疫苗)against anthrax, which was successful.

The discovery of a cure for anthrax encouraged Pasteur to develop a cure for rabies (狂犬病)— a very common disease at the time. Using similar principles, he developed a vaccine against the disease. The test on animals affected with rabies was successful; however, he was unwilling to test it on humans for fear that it might not work. At one point he considered testing it on himself. However, before he could do that, a young boy was brought to him who had been bitten seriously by a rabid dog. His parents agreed to try the uncertain new technique. His treatment was a success and news of the treatment soon spread. Over 350 people came to Pasteur for treatment. Pasteur and his team of scientists worked around the clock to save people who became ill with rabies.

Pasteur died in 1895, aged 73. On his last day, he said, “l should like to be younger, so as to devote myself to the study of new diseases.”

8. According to Paragraph 2, the process of Pasteurisation _________.

A. made milk much tastier

B. led to the solution to anthrax

C. improved the protein in milk

D. ensured the safety of drinking milk

9. What did Pasteur suggest farmers do to prevent the spread of anthrax?

A. Raise as few cattle as possible.

B. Deal with dead animals in a proper way.

C. Find more fresh grass for their sheep every day.

D. Bath cows frequently to reduce microorganisms on them.

10. What made Pasteur consider testing the vaccine against rabies on himself?

A. The pressure from the news media.

B. His great confidence in its success.

C. The pain of being bitten by a rabid dog.

D. His uncertainty about its effects on Humans.

11. What can be the best title for this text?

A. The birth of early vaccines .

B. The advancement of germ study
